What the EU Blue Card is

A residence and work permit for highly qualified employment in Germany, and the fastest route to settlement anywhere in the European Union.

The number that matters

Twenty-one months. A Blue Card holder with B1 German can apply for a settlement permit — the Niederlassungserlaubnis — after twenty-one months of contributions. Without B1 the qualifying period is longer. Nothing else in the EU is close, and it makes the language the whole decision rather than a detail to attend to later.

The salary threshold is two numbers, not one

The general threshold for 2026 is €50,700. The reduced threshold for shortage occupations — which include IT, engineering and medicine — is €45,934.20.

A great many Indian IT professionals are told they fall short of the Blue Card when they are comfortably above the threshold that actually applies to them. If a figure near €50,700 has been quoted at you for a shortage occupation, it is the wrong one.

The IT exception worth knowing

An IT specialist can qualify on demonstrated professional experience without a formal degree — three years of comparable experience in the last seven. Germany is unusual in this. It is the single most useful thing to know about the route for self-taught and non-graduate engineers, and it is rarely mentioned.

What you need

A recognised degree, or the IT experience route. A binding job offer or contract at or above the applicable threshold. Recognition of the qualification where the profession is regulated.

Where it goes wrong

Qualification recognition started too late — the assessment takes months and the job offer will not wait. A contract written below the shortage threshold when the role qualifies for it. And postponing German: the difference between B1 and no German is the difference between settlement in under two years and a substantially longer wait, and it is the one variable entirely within your control.

Worth knowing about family

A Blue Card holder's spouse has immediate access to the labour market, with no separate work permit and no waiting period. Several comparable European routes delay this by a year or more, and for a two-income household it changes the arithmetic of the move entirely.

Where it goes wrong, in order of frequency

Qualification recognition begun after the offer rather than before. A contract written to the general threshold when the shortage threshold applies. German postponed until the settlement application, by which time the twenty-one-month clock has already run at the slower rate.

None of these is an eligibility failure. All three cost the same thing: time you cannot get back.
