How Ireland actually selects people

Ireland's route for skilled migrants is the Critical Skills Employment Permit, and its logic is narrow but generous: the state names the occupations it is short of, and for those occupations it makes the process markedly easier than for anything else.

If your job appears on the Critical Skills Occupations List and you hold an offer at the required salary, several requirements that apply elsewhere fall away. There is generally no labour market needs test — the employer does not have to advertise the role locally first. Your spouse or partner can apply for permission to work. And the permit leads to long-term residence on a comparatively short timeline.

Two organisations are involved and they do different things. The Department of Enterprise issues the employment permit. Immigration Service Delivery handles the visa and your registration once you arrive. A permit is not permission to enter; both steps are required.

What this means for you

• Check the list before anything else. Eligibility here is binary. An occupation on the list is straightforward; the same job off the list falls back to a General Employment Permit, which is slower, requires the employer to advertise first, and carries weaker family rights.
• The offer must meet a minimum duration as well as a salary floor — this is a permit for a substantive role, not short-term work.
• English-speaking, EU-based, common-law. For Indian professionals in IT, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and financial services, Ireland combines a familiar working language with EU residence, which is a rare pairing.

Where it goes wrong

Almost always the occupation list. People apply against the job they do rather than the job as classified, and the classification is what the Department assesses.
