How the Netherlands actually selects people

The Dutch highly skilled migrant route is the fastest major European work permit to obtain, and the reason is structural: the government does not assess your qualifications at all. It assesses your salary, and it delegates everything else to your employer.

There is no points test, no degree evaluation and no labour market test. There is one substantive condition — your employer must be a recognised sponsor registered with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service, and your salary must clear the threshold for your age bracket. Meet both and decisions are typically measured in weeks.

The trade-off is that your position is tied to a small set of employers. The register of recognised sponsors is public, and if a company is not on it, that company cannot hire you under this route regardless of how much it wants to.

What this means for you

• Search the sponsor register first. It reorders which applications are worth making, and it is the single most useful hour you can spend on a Dutch job search.
• Salary thresholds differ by age, with a lower band for those under thirty. They are reviewed annually.
• The 30% ruling — a tax facility for incoming workers meeting certain conditions — materially changes take-home pay. Its terms have been narrowed in recent years, so check the current position rather than older accounts of it.
• English is genuinely workable in Dutch technology, research and finance, which is not true everywhere in mainland Europe.

Where it goes wrong

Job changes. The permit is tied to the sponsoring employer, and moving to a company that is not a recognised sponsor puts your residence at risk. Check the register before resigning, not after.
