How Germany actually selects people

Germany offers something no other major destination does: a route that lets you enter to look for work, rather than requiring the job first. The Opportunity Card is a points-based job-seeker permit, and it exists because Germany has a labour shortage it cannot fill domestically.

There are two doors, and they suit different people.

• The Opportunity Card is for those who qualify but have no offer yet. You score points for qualifications, language, experience and age, and if you clear the bar you may enter and search — with limited work permitted while you do.
• The EU Blue Card is for those who already hold a graduate-level offer at the required salary. It is faster, it leads to permanent settlement sooner, and it carries mobility rights across the EU.

The step that decides everything

Recognition of your qualification. Germany regulates far more occupations than the English-speaking destinations, and for those occupations a foreign degree or trade certificate must be formally recognised as equivalent before it counts for anything — a visa, a licence, or a salary band.

For Indian applicants this is the single most common point of failure, and it is rarely the qualification itself. It is that recognition takes months, must be started from India, and requires documents in specific certified translations.

What this means for you

German is not always legally required, particularly on the Blue Card in IT roles. In practice it decides whether you are hired, whether you are promoted, and whether the move works socially. Treat it as a requirement even where the rules do not.

The wider point in Germany's favour: costs are low by comparison, the route to permanent residence is short, and family reunification is well established.
