The rule that makes South Africa worth reading about
Permanent residence under section 27(b) requires five years of post-qualification experience — not five years of living in South Africa.
Read that again, because almost every other permanent residence system in the world counts time spent inside the country. South Africa counts time spent in your profession, wherever you did it. A qualified professional with five years behind them already satisfies that criterion on the day they apply.
It is materially faster than almost any comparable route, and it is barely marketed.
The points test
South Africa gazetted a statutory points system on 18 October 2024, and it applies to two visas with the same pass mark of 100 — the difference is composition, not total.
An occupation on the critical skills list scores 100 on its own, which carries the Critical Skills Work Visa outright. The General Work Visa reaches the same 100 by any other combination: a master's or doctorate scores 50, a bachelor's or honours 30, ten years of experience 30, five to ten years 20, an employment offer above R976,194 adds 50 and one above R650,976 adds 20, an offer from a Trusted Employer adds 30, and proficiency in one official language adds 10.
That second route is the genuinely new thing. Before this, a skills route without a listed occupation did not exist.
English counts
English is one of South Africa's eleven official languages, so the language points are available to most applicants from India without any test at all. It is a small row on the grid and it is the one nobody realises they already have.
What we cannot tell you from a calculator
Whether your occupation is on the critical skills list. That list is a separate gazette, it changes, and it is worth 100 points — the entire pass mark. Checking it is the single highest-value thing you can do, and it takes one search.
Where it goes wrong
Assuming a work visa and permanent residence are the same application. They are not, and the points test governs the first. Assuming the critical skills list is stable — it is not. And quoting net-worth figures for the financially-independent route: the Regulations leave those to ministerial gazette, and the numbers circulating online could not be verified against any official source.
Who South Africa suits
A professional with a recognised degree and five or more years in their field who wants permanent residence rather than a long temporary run. The experience rule is the whole argument, and it favours people who have already done the years — which is most of the people who ask us about it.

Do I need SAQA evaluation for South African permanent residence?
Yes. South Africa requires its own evaluation of foreign qualifications through SAQA, and permanent residence under the critical skills route also requires a certificate from the relevant professional body. Both are separate from your qualification itself and both take time.
