How the UK actually selects people

The UK does not run a points pool you can enter on your own merits. The route turns on one thing: a job offer from a licensed sponsor. No sponsor, no application — however strong your qualifications.

That single fact reorders everything. In Canada or Australia the work is on your profile; here the work is on the employer search, and specifically on employers that already hold a sponsor licence. A company willing to hire you but not licensed to sponsor cannot help you, and licensing is not quick.

Once you hold a Certificate of Sponsorship, the rest is comparatively mechanical: the job must sit at or above the required skill level, the salary must clear both a general floor and the going rate for that specific occupation code, and you must prove English.

What this means for you

• The occupation code matters more than the job title. Salary thresholds are set per code, and the going rate for the code you are sponsored under is what you must clear — not the average for your field.
• The visa runs up to five years, and settlement follows five years of continuous residence. It is a genuine route to remaining permanently, which several competing work visas are not.
• Decisions from outside the UK are usually quick — a matter of weeks rather than months once a complete application is in.

Where it goes wrong

Two failures dominate. The first is a salary that clears the general threshold but not the going rate for the occupation code, which is a refusal on arithmetic. The second is time spent chasing employers who cannot sponsor. Checking the published register of licensed sponsors before applying for a role costs nothing and saves months.
