What do I need for the German Opportunity Card?
The German Opportunity Card needs either a qualification fully recognised in Germany, or a degree or two-year vocational training recognised in India plus German at A1 or English at B2 and at least six points from age, experience, language and shortage-occupation factors. You must also show you can support yourself, usually through a blocked account.
Two ways in
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a one-year residence permit for job seeking, introduced in 2024. There are two ways to qualify.
Route one: full recognition. If your degree or vocational qualification has already been recognised as equivalent by the German authority for your profession, you qualify without a points test.
Route two: the points test. You need all of the following:
- a university degree, or vocational training of at least two years, recognised by the state in which you obtained it
- German at level A1, or English at level B2
- at least six points
Where the points come from
- partial recognition of your qualification: 4 points
- your occupation on Germany's shortage list: 1 point
- professional experience in your field: 2 points for two years in the last five, 3 points for five years in the last seven
- age: 2 points under 35, 1 point at 35 to 39
- German: 1 point for A2, 2 for B1, 3 for B2 or above
- English at C1: 1 point
- a previous legal stay in Germany of at least six months: 1 point
- applying together with a spouse who also qualifies: 1 point
An Indian engineer aged 30 with five years of experience, English at C1 and German at A2 scores 3 plus 2 plus 1 plus 1, which is seven, and qualifies.
Money
You must show you can support yourself for the stay: a blocked account with the amount the German missions specify for the year, or a part-time job offer. The card allows up to 20 hours a week of work while you look, and trial work of up to two weeks per employer.
What it leads to
A job offer in Germany, then a switch to a work residence permit or an EU Blue Card without leaving the country. The card itself is not a route to permanent residence; the job that follows it is.
