How do I get PR in Canada from India?
Most Indian applicants get Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry: you need at least one year of skilled work, an educational credential assessment, an English test at CLB 7 or better, and a Comprehensive Ranking System score high enough for a draw. A provincial nomination adds 600 points and is the usual route when the score falls short.
The route most people take
Express Entry is not a visa. It is a pool. You create a profile, the system scores it out of 1,200, and roughly every fortnight Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invites the highest-scoring profiles to apply. Only after an invitation do you file the actual permanent residence application.
To enter the pool through the Federal Skilled Worker stream you need all of the following:
- at least one continuous year of skilled work experience in the last ten years, in a job at TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 of Canada's occupation classification
- an English or French test at Canadian Language Benchmark 7 in every ability, which for IELTS General Training is 6.0 in each band
- an educational credential assessment (ECA) showing your Indian degree is equivalent to a Canadian one
- at least 67 out of 100 on the six-factor selection grid
- proof of settlement funds unless you already have a valid Canadian job offer
What decides whether you are invited
Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Age, education, language and experience make up most of it. Category-based draws for healthcare, trades, education, STEM and French speakers invite lower scores than general draws, so which category your occupation falls in matters as much as the total.
A provincial nomination adds 600 points and almost guarantees an invitation. Each province runs its own programme with its own occupation lists.
In order
- Take IELTS or CELPIP and get your degree assessed. Both take one to three months.
- Check your score. Our free assessment runs the real CRS grid and shows the gap to recent cut-offs.
- Enter the pool, and apply to provinces whose lists match your occupation.
- On invitation, file within 60 days with police certificates, medicals and proof of funds.
- IRCC's service standard for a complete application is six months.
We will tell you if your score is not competitive. That is more useful than a profile that sits in the pool for a year.
