What Express Entry is

A pool, not an application. You submit a profile, receive a Comprehensive Ranking System score out of 1,200, and wait for a round of invitations. IRCC publishes the cut-off and the number of invitations after every round, which makes it the most transparent selection system of any major destination.

An invitation gives you 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application. That window does not move, and it is where most of the damage happens.

How the score is built

Core human capital — age, education, official language ability and Canadian work experience — carries the largest share. Skill transferability combinations add on top: education plus language, foreign experience plus language, a certificate of qualification in a trade.

Language is the largest lever you can actually pull. More points move on a CLB band than on almost anything else changeable within a year, and it is the only input you can sit again. A half-band improvement across four abilities is routinely worth more than a second degree.

What no longer scores

Arranged employment was removed on 25 March 2025. A job offer was worth 50 points, or 200 for a senior managerial role. It is now worth zero. Many calculators and most agency websites still award it. If your score was estimated before that date, or by anyone quoting job-offer points, it is wrong in the direction that costs money.

The two ways in

General rounds take everyone above a single cut-off, which has recently sat near 516 for Canadian Experience Class draws.

Category-based rounds are limited to specific fields — healthcare, trades, education, French-language ability among them — and clear at materially lower scores. A profile that is nowhere near a general cut-off can be comfortably inside a category round. Checking which categories you fall into is worth more than another attempt at the language test.

Provincial nomination adds 600 points, which makes an invitation effectively certain. Each province runs its own streams and its own criteria, and they are not scored the same way.

Where it goes wrong

An expired language test at the moment of invitation. A reference letter that does not state hours and duties in the form IRCC expects. An educational credential assessment begun after the invitation rather than before. None of these are eligibility problems. All of them end the same way.

What to check before anything else

Whether you fall into a category-based round. It is the single highest-value question in Canadian migration right now, it takes ten minutes to answer, and it changes the required score by a margin no amount of profile-polishing will match.
