How long does it take to get PR in Canada?
From first test to landing, Canada PR through Express Entry usually takes twelve to eighteen months for an applicant with a competitive score: two to four months of preparation, a wait in the pool that depends entirely on your score, and IRCC's six-month service standard once you have applied. A weak score can mean an indefinite wait.
The three phases
Preparation, two to four months. IELTS results arrive in a few days; the educational credential assessment takes several weeks after your university sends transcripts. Employment letters, which Indian employers are often slow to issue in the format IRCC wants, run in parallel.
The pool, unknown. Your profile is valid for twelve months. If your score is above the cut-off of a draw you qualify for, an invitation can come within weeks. If it is below, nothing happens until a draw dips, your score rises, or a province nominates you. This is the phase nobody can put a date on, and the one where honest advice matters most.
Processing, about six months. IRCC's service standard for a complete Express Entry application is six months from submission. The published processing times page shows the current figure, which moves with volume.
What makes it slower
- a medical or police certificate that expires mid-process and has to be redone
- a reference letter that does not state duties, so IRCC asks for more
- a provincial nomination stream that pauses or changes its list part-way
- applying with a spouse whose documents are incomplete
What makes it faster
Nothing shortens IRCC's processing. What you control is the first phase, and whether your score is high enough that the second phase is short. Retaking IELTS for CLB 9 before you enter the pool often saves more months than anything else.
