Ireland's route for occupations on the Critical Skills list. It is employer-led rather than points-scored: there is no ranking, no pool and no language requirement. Eligibility is the occupation, the salary and the offer.

Stamp 4 is not permanent residence

After 21 months on the permit you can apply for Stamp 4, and this is where the industry consistently misleads.

Stamp 4 is genuinely valuable. It removes the tie to a single employer and lets you work without a permit. It is widely marketed as "Irish PR". It is not. It is a residence permission with an expiry date that has to be renewed.

Long Term Residency is the five-year status, applied for separately, on its own conditions.

If a timeline you have been shown promises Irish permanent residence in under two years, it is describing Stamp 4 and calling it something it is not. The distinction matters most when you are comparing Ireland against Canada or Australia, where what you get at the end genuinely is permanent.

What Ireland is good at

No language requirement, which removes the largest single obstacle for many applicants. A permit granted on the strength of an offer rather than a score, so there is no waiting for a cut-off to move. Salary thresholds published per occupation. Immediate family reunification, which several comparable routes delay.

For a qualified professional with an offer in hand, it is among the most straightforward moves available anywhere in Europe.

Where it goes wrong

An occupation assumed to be on the Critical Skills list that is not — the list changes, and a role that qualified last year may not this year. A salary at the general threshold when the occupation carries a higher one. And treating Stamp 4 as the finish line, then discovering at year five that the clock for long-term residency was a different clock.

The two-year rule people miss

The Critical Skills permit is issued for two years, and for the first twelve months you cannot change employer without a new permit. That tie is shorter than most comparable routes, but it is real, and it is worth knowing before you accept an offer that looks marginal on other grounds.

Family reunification is immediate, which is unusual and is often the deciding factor for applicants with children.

Before you accept an offer

Check the occupation against the current Critical Skills list, and check the salary against the threshold for that specific occupation rather than the general one. An offer that fails either test cannot be rescued later, and both are public information you can verify yourself in an afternoon.
