What the Skilled Migrant Category is

New Zealand's residence pathway for skilled workers, and the simplest of the major points systems to model — because it is not a ranked pool. You either reach the threshold or you do not.

The category was rebuilt on 24 August 2026. Any score calculated before that date, by anyone, is out of date.

How it scores now

Points come from a recognised qualification, occupational registration, income relative to the median wage, and New Zealand work experience.

A recognised bachelor's degree moved from 3 points to 4. Occupational registration is now scored across four bands rather than one, so a registration that previously scored a flat amount may score more or less depending on the length of training behind it. Qualifications gained in New Zealand and qualifications gained abroad no longer score identically — which affects almost everyone applying from India.

The wage threshold

NZ$35.00 an hour from 9 March 2026. Skilled employment paid below it does not count towards the points a job is worth, whatever the job title or the qualification says. The threshold moves, and it moves the eligibility of everyone sitting near it.

Why the design matters

There is no cut-off that drifts with demand and no invitation round to wait for. That makes New Zealand far easier to plan around than Canada or Australia, and far less forgiving of a near miss. A profile one point short is not "close" — it is not eligible.

It also means the levers are narrow. Where a Canadian applicant can move a score through language, New Zealand rewards registration, recognised qualifications and paid work at or above the threshold. Improving a New Zealand score usually means changing your job, not sitting a test again.

Where it goes wrong

Assuming a job offer at any salary counts. Assuming an overseas qualification scores the same as a New Zealand one. Assuming an occupational registration obtained abroad is recognised without assessment. Each of those is a common assumption, and each produces a score that does not survive contact with the application.

Before you apply

Confirm that your qualification is recognised at the level you expect, and that any occupational registration you hold will be accepted without further assessment. Both are answerable in advance, and both decide the score before a single point is claimed.

The green list matters more than the points

Occupations on Immigration New Zealand's green list have faster and simpler residence routes, some of them straight to residence on arrival rather than through the points system at all. If your occupation is on it, the Skilled Migrant Category may not be the route you should be using.
