What is the age limit for Canada PR?

There is no upper age limit for Express Entry, but age is scored. The Comprehensive Ranking System gives its maximum age points between 20 and 29, takes points away for every year after 30, and gives none from 45. The Federal Skilled Worker eligibility grid stops awarding age points at 47.

Two separate age scores

Express Entry uses two grids and both count age.

The first is the Federal Skilled Worker eligibility grid, the 67-point test you must pass to enter the pool. Age 18 to 35 scores the full 12 points; each year after 35 loses a point, and 47 or older scores zero. Missing age points can be made up elsewhere on the grid.

The second is the Comprehensive Ranking System, which ranks everyone in the pool. Age is worth up to 110 points for a single applicant or 100 with a spouse, at its maximum from 20 to 29. From 30 it drops every year, and from 45 it is zero.

What that means in practice

A 40-year-old with strong language scores and a master's degree can still qualify for the pool and can still be invited, but is competing against 28-year-olds who start 50 or more points ahead. The usual ways to close that gap are a higher language band, a provincial nomination, which adds 600 points, or a category-based draw for your occupation.

Provincial and other routes

Provincial nominee programmes and family sponsorship have no age scoring at all, which is why we look at them first for applicants over 40.
